Ever wondered how to improve and maintain the health of your ears? Our Nurses reveal some essential tips to maintain ear health.
1. ‘ Never put anything smaller then your elbow in your ear’
Ideally the ears clean themselves by a natural migration process more info here. Ear wax is a natural product of the ear which protects and water proofs the canal skin and is also acidic in nature which gives it antibacterial and anti fungal properties.
The ears should be cleaned when enough wax accumulates to cause symptoms or prevent an ear assessment. source
A build up of wax is more likely to occur in people who insert implements into their ears, those who have narrow ear canals, hearing aid users and older adults. source
2. If you are prone to ear infections, ‘keep the ears dry’
If there is a blockage of wax in the external auditory canal, water can enter the ear canal and get trapped behind the blockage.
When water is trapped in the ear canal, bacteria that normally inhibits the skin and ear canal multiply, causing infection of the ear canal and is often referred to as ‘swimmers ear’ source
To avoid getting ‘swimmer’s ear’ try the following:
– Dry your ears well with a towel after swimming
– Tilt your head to the side to drain the water from your ear
– Wear earplugs if you swim a lot or if you have a current infection source
3. Protect your ears from loud noises
The use of sound cancelling headphones or earphones will allow you to use much lower volumes and still hear the tunes and help protect your hearing in the long term. Source
4. Let the ears work naturally, even if the wax doesn’t fall out on its own.
For those who are prone to wax impaction, it is something that may frequently occur over your lifetime.
As mentioned above, a build up of wax is more likely to occur in people who insert implements into their ears, those who have narrow ear canals, hearing aid users and older adults. source
Advice? Allow your ear wax to build up until it blocks the opening of the external auditory canal and you become symptomatic. From here, ensure you have them cleaned to reduce symptoms and maintain your ear health source.
